Circle Program 2009
The Arts allow us to discover who we can be. Imagine the world without art and literature, music and dance. Life is incomplete without ways to express ourselves and to discover who we are and what we can be.
January 28:
If you could invite any two authors as dinner guests, who would they be and why? Introduce us to your favorite book of theirs
February 18:
The biography of a great artist (theatre/music/ballet/art etc)
March 25:
An inventor or innovator in fact or fiction
April 29:
Remarkable women in literature – fact or fiction
May 27:
A favorite poet, modern or classical, their life and times –read us a poem or extract
June 24:
A city you have never visited but dream about – what is its allure to you? Bring visual material
July 29:
Short stories by an author you especially admire
August 26:
A real-life mystery investigated and/or solved OR A work of detection – fact or fiction
September 30:
A political, social, or economic commentary on any period in history up to and including modern times
October 28:
A book which tells the story (fact or fiction) of a person who overcomes great odds
November 25:
A book about a specific historical period or event
December 9:
Christmas lunch
Venue
We meet in the upstairs cafeteria at Exedra Books on
Via España (where food and beverages may be purchased).
Meetings are on the LAST Wednesday of each month
(excepting National Holidays). The meetings start
sharp at 10.30 a.m., so please come at 10.15 a.m.
Some guidelines for thinking about books, and sharing
your reading experience
1. Why did you choose this book?
2. Did this book make you think, i.e. was your response
mostly intellectual, or was the reading experience mostly
emotional?
3. What do you think was the authors intent in
writing the book, i.e. to make a social, moral or political
point, to provide a learning experience, simply to
entertain, or something else?
4. Where did the context of the book fit into your life
views and experiences? Why did it resonate with you?
Did the impact of this book change your thinking in any
way?
5. What kind of mood, setting or atmosphere did the author
capture in the book?
6. Which of the characters in the book stole your heart,
or with which did you identify?
7. What do you think motivated the main character(s) envy,
malice, honesty, integrity, love, hate, mischief?
8. What other books has the author written and which
other ones have you read?
